In SJ Rozan's China Trade, the first in her Lydia Chin and Bill Smith series, we jump right into PI Lydia's case. She's been hired by the Chinatown Pride organization to find some uninsured stolen porcelains. Although Lydia and Bill have their individual agencies, they frequently team up to help each other out.
Even though Lydia believes a gang is behind the theft, knowing the porcelains will have to be fenced, she and Bill reach out to a museum curator who seems to have a secret shared with the wealthy owner of the porcelains.
Although I gave this 4.2 stars, I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of Lydia. I find her somewhat annoying, and her character development is inconsistent. Conversely, we don't get enough of Bill's character to form a lasting impression of him. I am continuing on with the series and would recommend starting here if you, like me, have to read series in order. I do hope that I'll be able to observe ongoing growth in the characters and their relationship. This is well-plotted, has good pacing, and did leave me wanting to follow the duo on their next case.
