In The Laird of Drumlychtoun, the first in Hilary Pugh's Ian Skair, Private Investigator series, we meet kind-hearted PI Ian. He receives a letter from Alexander (Xander) Lyton, the Laird of Drumlychtoun, wanting to engage Ian but providing no information other than an address. Ian replies to the mysterious letter, asking for more information about the case, and receives a response from Xander's wife, Bridget, offering to pay him for the day if he will only visit them. When he takes her up on it, the Lyton's recount to him the history of a missing family heirloom, a Bishop's ring, which they want him to recover.
Ian is drawn into the world of Xander's estranged sister, Ailish, and her complicated family ties as well as secret indiscretions from Xander's youth as he does the legwork to track down the ring. Ian does as much work bringing the dysfunctional family together as he does to resolve the mystery.
Overall, great fun with likable characters and great settings. I gave this 4 stars, and I'll definitely be continuing on with the series.
