At the beginning of Whose Body?, Lord Peter Wimsey is rather bored, so when his mother calls and tells him of the unidentified dead body in the bathtub of an architect, he jumps at the chance to investigate. The body is assumed to be that of a wealthy financier who has gone missing, but Wimsey quickly surmises by the condition of the body, that it can’t be. When the architect is arrested for murder, Wimsey is retained by the man’s mother to save her son. He knows the murder is somehow tied to the missing millionaire, he just needs to figure out how. Working in conjunction with a Scotland Yard inspector, Wimsey works both the case of the murder and the missing person to discover the identity of the body and what happened to the millionaire.
Dorothy L. Sayers’ first Wimsey book, Whose Body establishes the character of Lord Peter Wimsey with all his quicks and unlimited powers of observation. Highly recommended.
