Thomas Hardy - The Return of the Native
Monday, March 1, 2010
Except for Jude the Obscure, I have not read any Hardy probably because Jude was one of if not my least favorite Victorian novel I studied in grad school. This novel shared some common themes with Jude including a sense of inevitable hopelessness. The conclusion of Native hints at possibilities for hope though where Jude did not. Some of the descriptions of and the scenes occurring on the moors are reminiscent of Wuthering Heights, so I did enjoy the Gothic whisperings here.
