Review | A Farewell to Yarns | Jill Churchill

In Jill Churchill's A Farewell to Yarns (second in series), Jane Jeffry is settling into life as a widow. Knowing that her husband was leaving her on the night he was killed has reduced her mourning immensely, but some parts of widowhood like living on a greatly reduced budget are taking some getting used to especially now that it's Christmas.

As Jane prepares for her children's first Christmas without a father, she is also preparing for a visit from an old friend she hasn't seen in years and who she never knew that well. Phyllis Wagner's husband made his millions years ago and moved them to a tropical island where her only contact with Jane has been through greeting cards.

When Jane and her friend Shelley pick up Phyllis at the airport, Jane is shocked to see how much better looking Phyllis is then she used to be. But even more shocking is the young man, Bobby, the formerly childless Phyllis introduces as her son. She admits to Jane that she got pregnant while in high school and gave the baby up for adoption. Now that she has found him, Phyllis refuses to admit what a horrible person he is, but his arrogance and rudeness. have forced her to leave her husband who wants to have nothing more to do with this bad seed. Phyllis has changed her will, leaving everything she personally owns to Bobby.

Jane doesn't have time to dwell on Phyllis' problems as she and Shelley are in charge of setting up the church's Christmas boutique. The boutique is being held at a large home owned by the widow of a young rockstar and her new husband. In the midst of setting up the sale, Jane is called to the house next door which Phyllis has bought for herself and Bobby when Phyllis is found murdered in her bedroom.

Although the plot is predictable and could have used some stronger editing, Jane and Shelley are likable characters, and this series is amusing for the shenanigans these female pals get into together.
